Global Healthcare Worker Shortage Looms: EU Takes Action to Address Critical Nurse Deficit

23 January 2025

This investment aims to support EU countries in two key ways: by implementing strategies to retain experienced nurses, preventing further attrition from the profession, and by implementing programs to attract new individuals to pursue careers in nursing. The initiative’s launch in Warsaw, Poland, underscores the significance of this issue for the EU, particularly as Poland currently holds the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The 36-month program will prioritize EU member states facing the most significant healthcare workforce challenges. This targeted approach will ensure that resources are directed towards those areas most in need of support. The program will encompass a range of initiatives, including mentoring programs designed to guide and support aspiring nurses, initiatives focused on improving the well-being of current nurses to combat burnout and improve job satisfaction, and exploration of digital solutions to streamline workflows and enhance patient care.

This EU action is not occurring in isolation. A 2023 EURES report further highlights the severity of healthcare professional shortages in several European countries, including Switzerland, Norway, Germany, Ireland, Austria, Denmark, and the Netherlands. These nations are actively seeking a diverse range of healthcare professionals, from specialist doctors and nurses to allied health professionals such as physiotherapists, pharmacists, and audiologists. The report also highlights a significant reliance on foreign-trained healthcare workers in some of these countries, emphasizing the international nature of the healthcare workforce challenge.
