Denmark to Implement Higher Minimum Salary for Foreign Workers in 2025
COPENHAGEN – Starting January 1, 2025, Denmark will increase the minimum salary requirements for foreigners applying for residence and work permits. This policy change, announced by the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI), aims to ensure that foreign workers earn wages comparable to Danish standards and are treated fairly. The updated salary levels apply to all applications submitted after December 31, 2024.

The new income level will be used to evaluate whether offered salaries align with Danish norms. The Danish government wants to ensure all workers in the country, both foreign and domestic, are being paid fairly.
For a residence and work permit to be granted, your salary and employment terms must correspond to Danish standards. This means that you must receive remuneration that corresponds to the standards of the type of employment in question in Denmark, SIRI explains.
Key Application Dates and Schemes Affected:
As SIRI explains, foreigners who submit an application for a residence and work permit after December 31, 2024, will have their application assessed based on the new income level. Applications submitted between October 1 and December 31, 2024, will be assessed based on the current levels. Therefore, the new update will only affect those who apply starting next year.
The salary requirement applies to both first-time applicants and those seeking extensions of their residence and work permits. SIRI notes that the requirement applies to the following schemes:
- Pay Limit Scheme
- Supplementary Pay Limit Scheme
- Fast Track Scheme
- Researcher’s Scheme
- Positive List for People with a Higher Education
- Positive List for Skilled Work
- Special Individual Qualifications Scheme
In general, Danish authorities assume that a foreign worker’s salary corresponds to Danish standards if their employment contract states that the employment is covered by a collective agreement.
In cases where the salary does not meet the set standards, authorities will require a comment from the employer before making a decision on the application.
