Europe Charts a Bold Course: The "Competitiveness Compass" for a Sustainable Future

04 February 2025

Brussels – In a move signalling a decisive shift towards a future-proof economy, the European Commission has unveiled its “Competitiveness Compass,” a groundbreaking strategy designed to redefine European competitiveness for the next five years. This isn’t just another policy document; it’s a blueprint for a revitalized Europe, one that leads the world in both economic dynamism and environmental responsibility.

Forget the tired narrative of Europe struggling to keep up. The Competitiveness Compass acknowledges existing strengths – the bedrock of rights and values, the power of the Single Market, world-class infrastructure, and a highly skilled workforce – but it also recognizes the need for a bold, proactive approach in a rapidly changing global landscape. This isn’t about playing catch-up; it’s about setting the pace.

The Compass rests on three interconnected pillars

This ambitious agenda is underpinned by five crucial cross-cutting initiatives: a relentless drive for simplification of regulations; a renewed push to dismantle remaining barriers in the Single Market; the creation of a European Savings and Investment Union to fuel innovation; a focus on developing the skills needed for the jobs of the future; and a new Competitiveness Coordination Tool to ensure that EU and national policies are working in lockstep.

The Competitiveness Compass isn’t just a plan; it’s a declaration of intent. It’s a signal that Europe is ready to lead the way in building a sustainable and prosperous future.
